The Problem

For younger patients, the clinical environment is often intimidating. The unfamiliar quiet, minimalistic decor and distinct antiseptic smell, tend to make people feel anxious and uncomfortable.

The Purpose

The Child & Youth Mental Health Services clinic located on the Gold Coast in Brisbane, Australia aims to lessen the discomfort that comes with a medical space. For the best quality in life, mental wellbeing should be valued just much as physical wellbeing. It’s a cyclical process where thought affects behaviour, behaviour affects action, and action evokes thought.

The Solution

Inspired by the rich multicultural community of Australia,
I collaborated with my friend and fellow designer, Kaito Okohira to create a colourful mural concept. As individuals from different cultural backgrounds, Kaito and I wanted to create a piece that touched on inclusivity, no matter the cultural origin. This led to a design that combined Australian elements from both land and sea.

The Process

Kaito and I’s collaboration process is best described as
diamond-shaped. We begin with collective research before diverging into early ideation before converging once more to solidify ideas.
Kaito created the background environments while I created the foreground animal elements. The end result was a piece that reflects not only our individual journeys of belonging but also the unifying power of creative collaboration.
